About Me...

Stromatolites of Hamelin Pool, Shark Bay.
I am currently enrolled in a doctoral degree program (PhD) at the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (RSMAS) in the department of Marine Geology and Geophysics.  My research advisor is Dr. Pamela Reid, and I also work under the supervision of Dr. Gregor Eberli in association with the CSL - Center for Carbonate Research.

Last year I worked as a Teaching assistant at the University of Miami main campus Geology department.  Fall semester 2010, I taught the lab component of Geology 260 - Earth Materials, including detailed exercises on the physical and optical properties of common rock forming minerals and their occurence in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.  Spring semester 2011, I taught the lab component of Geology 440 - Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, involving the study of the genesis and classification of igneous and metamorphic rocks, field relationships of rock assemblages, and understanding binary and ternary phase diagrams.  Identification of common rock types in hand specimens and thin sections was also a large focus of the lab.

I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Miami, Florida in 2010, obtaining a degree in geological sciences with a minor in fine art.

My work at RSMAS focuses on modern marine microbialites which exist in both the Exuma chain of the Bahamas, as well as in Hamelin Pool, Shark Bay, Western Australia (as seen in the photo).  In particular, I examine the petrophysical properties of the microbialites and the surrounding facies, the microstructure of the microbialites, spatial organization, and morphology.

I’m currently in the process of developing an extensive 3 month field campaign to Hamelin Pool for February, March and April 2012.
